Program

Greek columns… or musical columns?

R. Strauss’ string sextet ‘Capriccio’ opens the concert. This piece is the overture to the opera of the same name, which takes place in a castle in France. From the very first scenes, R. Strauss poses a real question about the structure of opera: ‘First the words? First the music?’

In I. Xenakis’ sextet ‘Ittidra’, the six strings in homorhythm offer a series of cluster sounds (12 permanent sounds throughout the piece).

Written during P.I. Tchaikovsky’s stay in Florence (Italy), the sextet ‘Souvenir de Florence’ showcases the influence of Italian architecture.

String sextets:

Richard Strauss: Capriccio

Iannis Xenakis: Ittidra

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence

Players

Thierry Brodard and Fabienne Taccola, violins
Vinciane Béranger and Ieva Sruogyte, violas
